Exploring the Outdoors

Whether on foot, by bike, or on the water, I love to explore the world around us. While studying abroad in Chile, I had the opportunity to explore the Patagonian region, exposing myself to new ecosystems and cultures. Closer to home, I enjoy biking on the extensive trail system and swimming in the lakes.

Interacting with the Spanish Language

Spanish has been an integral part of my upbringing and it's an important part of my life today, too. I enjoy reading Gabriel Garcia Marquez novels in Spanish, listening to groovy Reggaeton music, and watching films created in Latin America and Spain.

Giving and Receiving Love

Having a tight knit community is critical for me; showing love and knowing I'm surrounded by people who would do the same for me gives value to everything I do. I'm lucky enough to live with nine other women in a house which we call "The Womansion." Pushing the boundaries and lifting each other up is what we strive to do.

Non-Academic Interests

Writing Sample

The fall semester of my senior year, I began working on a research project investigating the way spatial mismatch affects job accessibility in the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area. This case study was the main project from one of my courses, but I hope to continue developing and refining my topic into spring semester.

Notable Classes

Modern American Communities

C & E Soc 645

This course exposed me to the importance of place in determining an individual's access to opportunities, both economic and social. In this course, we investigated topics in urban sociology, most notably spatial mismatch, gentrification and residential segregation. We used the tools we learned throughout the semester to conduct a case study on a metropolitan area in the Midwest, analyzing a specific phenomena and the way it affects different groups of people.

Environmental Conservation

Geography 339

In this course, we investigated environmental conservation mainly from a geographical perspective, without ignoring the social and institutional factors also at play. I developed a better understanding of how the environment, politics and the economy interact and come together to enhance or hinder conservation practices.

Capstone Experience

C & E Soc 540

In this course, my classmates and I participated in a Community-Based Research project, working alongside our community partner, the Urban Community Arts Network, a group that focuses on educating Madison residents on issues related to Hip-Hop. In addition to conducting research, we took our previous years of learning a step further, preparing us soon-to-be-grads for life after college.

International Academic Programs

Student Marketing Coordinator

After spending a semester abroad in Santiago, Chile, I started working in the study abroad office to help other students implement study abroad into their Wisconsin Experience. As a Student Marketing Coordinator, I gave presentations, tabled at events, edited marketing materials, and contributed to ongoing marketing initiatives.
-
Through this experience, I further developed my communication skills, having to interact one-on-one and with large groups.

Associated Students of Madison

Intern & Intern Coordinator

My sophomore year I participated in UW Madison's student government internship program, aimed at teaching students the ins and outs of direct action campaigns. The following semesters, I continued my participation with the program but instead acted as a mentor for students enrolled in the course.
-
For me, this internship illuminated the importance for grassroots organizing and direct action campaigns. It taught me how to advocate for myself and my peers, as the campaigns we were working on focused on issues affecting the student body.

Great Harvest Bread Company

Kneader - Team Member

Discipline and a good work ethic are necessary to work as a kneader at a bakery. Great Harvest Bread Company helped me improve my people and baking skills, as I was able to work independently with the bread or up front with the customers.

Food Waste Awareness

During my first year at UW-Madison, I was exposed to the toxic issue of food waste. In the United States, around 40% of the food produced is thrown away. That is an unfathomable amount. During the remainder of my time at UW, my goal was to expose as many people as I could to this issue, by posting photos on social media, handing out food that had been collected from local grocery store dumpsters (totally edible!), and helping create a video about the issue in Madison.

College of Agriculture & Life Sciences

Environmental Sciences is a rigorous, science-based interdisciplinary major that seeks to promote critical thinking and emphasize environmental problem solving in service to society. This major provides a broad-based education in the natural sciences, building on fundamentals in chemistry, physics, mathematics and biology.

Community & Environmental Sociology

College of Agriculture & Life Sciences

Sociology is the study of how societies are organized and change, and how the organization of society and social changes affect individuals, groups, and communities. The Community & Environmental Sociology department provides a broad view of how forces such as new technologies, globalization, changing social values, public policies, and the rise of new social movements are related to each other. In addition, we study local and practical issues such as community change, the interaction of humans and the environment, applied demography, the social issues of science and technology, and the design of more locally oriented food systems.

Academics - Majors

Bio

This past May, I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with degrees in Environmental Sciences and Community & Environmental Sociology. These two majors exposed me to the ways humans interact with their surroundings, and how we positively and negatively impact our planet.
-
From Ecology to Sociology, Computer Sciences and Gender and Womens Studies, this dual degree allowed me to dip my toes into a variety of topics, giving me the opportunity to explore the interconnectedness of the environment and society.
